This is the kind of book you read on a Sunday evening in the tub. It's characters are light hearted, believable and generally endearing. The title, like some of Michaels other books is from a wonderful poem, which doesn't represent a spoiler in anyway. It's a mystery, with a smart but falible female lead and several charming bachelors who may or maynot be the villian(s). Her references are intelligent without being pretentious and historically appropriate and honest without being maudlin. I adore this author and recommend her to friends that love books. I read this book every summer and imagine that I am also on summer vacation in a gothic manor. Medical students, politicians and archaeologists also recieve shout outs in this book, you may find a little extra humor in it if you fall into any of these categories.

The story began as a good read,but it became bogged down with too much detail. It had potential to be a great mystery, but the story line fell flat. You can read the first six chapters and the last chapter which is what I did and understand the whole book.
Love all of Barbara Michaels books. So sad there won't be any more. This has suspense, a little spooky, a love story and comedy. I love the characters. The female leads in her books are always great
One of my favorite murder/mysteries, have not ready anything by this author that I like nearly as much as this book, in fact, the others I tried were so bad they seemed written by someone else. This story has one of my favorite plots, favorite setting, and I really enjoyed the characters. Want more like it but have not found it thus far.
An enjoyable old-family-ties-that-bind-just-might-end-up-killing-you storyline that was fun to both read and listen to, but then as a kid, I also had a scary old grandmother afflicted by a stroke who lived in a cool scary old house so it was a bit nostalgic. The characters were brought to life by the talents of both author and narrator though at times the narrator seemed to be recalling a story very slowly.

I can't really peg this story as there was a touch of mystery, a touch of romance, a touch of humor, but I guess it mostly dealt with overcoming the past. The ending was a bit jumbled, but still overall a good listen. (The Audible photo suggests the story might be a bit gruesome, but it wasn't at all.)
I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed Barbara Michaels stories. This one, like many others, has just that touch of the supernatural that makes the hairs on the back of your neck rise. This was a reread for me. I was so impressed that I used the quote Julie used at the funeral at my own mother’s funeral.
This is one of my exploratory reads. That is what I call it when I learn about an author and read their most acclaimed books to get a sense of them. The good thing about the story is that it is old fashioned. It relies on characters and atmosphere instead of shock value. But that is also its limitation. The era is so...shall we say perplexing. For example, a character notes that a woman being 10 (or was it fifteen?) years younger than her rival was 10 reasons more for a man to prefer her. The heroine is absurdly young. I felt it was kind of 1950's Gothic Americana and you need to be in the mood for something old fashioned in both concept and execute to enjoy this.
In theory this was a good book - the concept of a mysterious skeleton and an old family mansion should have made for a good little gothic mystery. For some reason I just had a lot of trouble getting invested in the story. I think my biggest problem was that I thought it was obvious from very early on who was causing all the trouble, so there wasn't really any suspense. I also never really connected to any of the characters. Martha was the only character that really felt developed to me, and she wasn't likable.
