Ain't Misbehaving edition by Jennifer Greene Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

First of all I have read some of this author's later books and really liked them like Bookends but this book very early on I noticed how everything happened too fast. There was no build up of emotion and everything described seem just shallow, no depth and disconnected in places. It is kind of like when you a really good book that you loved and then you tell someone else about it, you barely tell them the basics because there is just so much detail and emotions and things going on when you read you can tell it all. That is how this story seemed, very shallow, skimmed the surface. It also was cliched in some ways. Things happening too fast, a not so believable conflict the male main character is having that holds him back from telling her things etc. Also some of the things that went on seemed strange and kind of just put in there and things just seemed disconnected. It was very hard for me to finish this book as I just was not that interested.
This is one of four of the recently re-released books from Greene's back list originally from Berkley when she wrote under the name Jeanne Grant (there are a planned fifteen over the course of seven months). I'm taking a wild stab in the dark - okay, not really wild - and guessing that out of a back list that large from roughly twenty-plus years ago, there are bound to be at least a few that don't really stand up to the test of time. Unfortunately for me, this was one of them.

That's not to say that this isn't a nice story. It's nice. But that's it. It's only..nice.

Mitch Cochran is the kind of guy every mom wants for her daughter he's handsome, has a nice house and a good job, he spends time at the hospital with sick kids, he has a loving family and he's a real gentleman. Kay Sanders is the kind of woman every mom wants for her son she pretty, has a nice house, a good job as a teacher, spends time at the hospital with sick kids, has a loving family and is a real lady. Of course there's trouble brewing under Mitch's surface. He's spent a lot of his youth and young adulthood ill and missed out on nearly everything a normal guy would and he's worried that he won't be able to keep up with the vivacious Kay, who just happens to teach sex ed.

My problem was never with the characters; Greene has a good ear for them (I've read the other releases). They really are engaging and their personal interaction is romantic at both the sweet and passionate ends. But the story is just cotton candy and really just airy cotton candy at that. There was just no conflict at all anywhere; it wasn't about Mitch overcoming his personal issues. It was a given that he would. But there was just nothing else, nothing but these two very, very nice people having a very, very nice relationship and working things out in a very civilized manner for the most part. Nobody even slammed any doors.

It was all very nice. And all a little dull.
4-1/2 stars

After recently reading Silver and Spice, I was eager to read something more by Ms. Greene and eagerly picked up AIN'T MISBEHAVING. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Mitch and Kay and highly recommend you pick it up as well.

After 13 years of illness, Mitch finally has a clean bill of health and is determined to live life to the fullest. When he meets Kay, he knows he wants to spend time with her, but not sure how to go about it since he's never really dated before. Mitch doesn't want to screw things up, so he proceeds cautiously. But after weeks and months of being left at the door with a small kiss, Kay is frustrated and decides to take matters into her own hands.

One thing I truly enjoyed about this book is that it portrays a "typical" courtship, a new relationship from the beginning without any extraneous outside forces as their source of conflict. They aren't pushed together because her life is in danger, or a target of a serial killer, or a psycho ex, well you get the picture. Boy and girl meet, are attracted to each other, hang out together, date each other, develop a relationship, etc.

The other think I truly enjoyed about this book is that Mitch has a lot of "Alpha" traits, but hasn't fully grown into them. He's just discovering himself through this relationship with Kay. So many books out there have the hero fully developed in Alpha mode when they waltz into the heroine's life. Mitch has been ill since he was 15 and missed out on a lot of self-discovery. I loved being along for the ride as he figured things out for himself. It was like watching the making of a man.

Kay was pretty terrific as well. She is pretty well put together and felt like someone I'd hang out with. I did have a hard time believing some of the conversations she had with her teenage students, though. She never preached or pushed her moral beliefs on them (or us), but I had a hard time believing that a sex-ed teacher would have some of the discussions she did.

The title of the book comes from the old Ella Fitzgerald song by the same title. Mitch is afraid of taking advantage of Kay and of pushing her for a physical relationship, so he always leaves her at her door very gentleman-like. Ain't misbehavin' here. But it address a topic all couples have to decide for themselves, which is when do you cross that physical line? And once it's crossed, where do you go from there?

I really enjoyed A'INT MISBEHAVING and look forward to reading more by Jennifer Greene.
