This is actually a good mystery -- it's just wrapped in really mean wrapping paper. The author is clearly food obsessed, and while I have no problem having overweight heroes, I do have a problem with making fun of them. It's not like they were in on the joke, it was like they were the (really big) butt of the jokes. Plus, the character's fascination with food is really disturbing. Yeah, we get it, they're fat. You point that out on every page. We don't need to see them salivating over food every single paragraph. It starts to become uncomfortable for the reader. It's sad, too. This is actually really well written and interesting -- if it wasn't for the jokes at the expense of fat people and the author's obsession with explaining every single little thing they stick in their mouths.Product details

52 Steps to Murder Book 1 Dekker Cozy Mystery Series edition by Steve Demaree Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
An old woman dies, and it turns out to be murder (in the title, no spoiler). Yet, no one could have gotten into the house. And then a second old lady dies. Never fear, though, the rotund detectives Lt. Dekker and Sgt. Murdock are on the case. But with nearly 20 suspects and 25 alibis, how will they ever solve the case?
The book is full of humor and nicely quirky characters. The reader is just as confused as the detectives (this reader, anyway). But it's a thoroughly enjoyable read. Initially, the humor seemed a little forced, but about 40 pages in, it either grew on me (close to my type of humor), or the author became more adept at letting the humor just flow instead of being inserted. I like that both detectives have faith and are open about it without clunking anyone over the head.
I was shocked to discover there are 13 books in the series. I was even more shocked to discover that I own the first 8 books! So many books, so little time (until I retire).
Highly recommended!

52 Steps to Murder (Book 1 Dekker Cozy Mystery...introduces the reader to the homicide team of Cy Dekker and Lou Murdock. This case really has them trying to figure out how two women in the Hill Top Place neighborhood, could have been killed within a short time of each other. Everyone seems to be a suspect and most of them have alibis, which put Cy and Lou back to the beginning of who killed these women. The neighborhood has its quirks, with some who seem to do nothing else but watch the neighborhood, and know everything that goes on in the neighborhood, hidden passageways, people who never seem to come out of their houses, and the list goes on to this seemingly quiet neighborhood, and its oddities. Cy and Lou, like in the following books in the series, have their Hershey almond candy bars and M&M's to "fortify" them in between their meal times. If I had read this book first, it would have hooked me to the series for sure. You can read the series out of sequence and still want to read more about this team of Lt. Dekker and Sgt. Murdock and their cases.
To each his own, I know, but I honestly cannot understand some of these negative reviews. I'm just glad that I didn't read and heed them before giving this author a try.
Perhaps I share Steven Demaree's crazy sense of humor, and that is why I got such a kick out of this book. Maybe those who don't share this particular humor were disappointed. Who knows?
No author or book is going to satisfy everyone, I know, and I'm just sorry that those who were displeased found this book to be so objectionable. Goodness knows, I've found some very popular best sellers to really miss the mark with me. Such is life.
While this is the first book in this series, it is not the first one of them I read. No matter. Suffice it to say, that I have managed to read them all so far, and have yet to be disappointed. In my opinion, the author does a great job developing the characters throughout the series, and it has been interesting watching them learn, grow, and make positive changes in their lives. They are definitely not static or boring!
If you think you might want to try this book, you may want to download a sample first.
SPOILER ALERT If mentions of God or the Bible offend you, just move on.
The author doesn't cram his religious views down the reader's throat, but I am sure there are those who still wouldn't care for any such mention, so just be aware.
In case you haven't already guessed, I highly recommend this book, as well as the others in the series, for a good clean read and a good laugh.
Two large policemen crack jokes and crunch chocolate while interviewing a granddaughter who has just discovered her grandmother's dead body. Really? Long, plodding descriptions of how these two bumblers struggle to climb 52 steps up to different houses. Many, many references to how fat they are and how out of shape. Yup, guess that's important to the story. Whole pages of questions the main character poses to himself, Could the postman...Why did the neighbour... Was she really at home... When did... How did... and on and on and ON! I thought I was the one who is supposed to ponder the evidence - but apparently I was mistaken. They stumble across clues and puff and pant through the entire story. I won't include the totally unbelievable bits which I tried to speed-read through - I don't want to spoil your surprise! Not good - an attempt at comedy, which falls stunningly flat - in fact, the only stunning element in this sorry story.
