Even though the title declares "Five Easy Steps" don't make the mistake of dismissing this book as a lightweight pamphlet. Susie Bailey explains, "The purpose of this book is to achieve a healthy body, healthy weight and healthy mind."In the process of helping her mother recover from illness, she utilized her research skills to read and organize three thousand medical papers into a working plan that helped her mother and herself find relief from multiple chronic conditions.
In order to understand illness, the author helps us understand the body and its systems. This book is clear and concise as it lays a foundation starting with an overview of genes and DNA, through digestion, the immune system, gut bacteria, and the brain. We see the body and its systems, and how and why things may be malfunctioning.
Finally in chapter 17 we find the plan to achieve a healthy body, healthy weight, healthy mind: "Five Easy Steps – a quick guide".
1. Heal the gut using diet, prebiotics, probiotics and possibly some supplements. Re-inoculate your gut microbiome.
2. Take measures to sustain the healthy gut – remove the food triggers, feed the healthy microbiome, take supplements where needed.
3. Remove triggers other than food (where possible) to restore your gut to health.
4. Remove stress (and how to achieve this). Avoid non-food triggers where possible.
5. Take steps to get enough sleep and exercise, and manage stress.
The author encourages readers to connect the dots in their own lives and "to remember is that all the different systems in your body are linked, and communicate with one another."
There are hundreds of different plans and diets to achieve the five steps. The author includes her personal protocol as an example.
I am very familiar with several popular nutritional plans: paleo, gluten-free, low-carb, raw, vegan, and others. So I am familiar with many of the health concepts presented in this book. Nonetheless, I enjoyed how this book provides a good understanding of the body basics without avoiding basic scientific facts or terminology. It helped me reinforce the information I had gathered from my reading and several recent webinars. I would recommend this book for anyone on a journey of discovery about the health of family members or of themselves.
