Skylight Confessions A Novel Alice Hoffman 9780316058780 Books

I'm accustomed to reading an Alice Hoffman novel and being winded, astonished, and sometimes in tears at the end. Not this time. The story had very Hoffman-esque twists (e.g., the changing pearls) but did not delve deeply enough into the character development.

The story of Arlyn Singer was sad and touching, and somehow frustrating. Arlyn reacts to a tragic event by making a promise to marry the next man she sees. She has passion, and the man she meets lacks that passion. In an Alice Hoffman world, that's a recipe for heartache.

We watch the lives of Arlyn's family (and those who come into it) unfold, and perhaps we secretly hope that they turn out just fine. Unfortunately, we know that they won't.

Though the house where Arlyn and her family lived was called the Glass Slipper, I felt that it was less of an analogy to the old lady who lived in a shoe than to the adage "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".

I read this book in about 2 hours or so, hoping for that Hoffman experience. While I love Alice Hoffman's writing, "Skylight Confessions" did not pack the punch that some of her earlier novels, notably "Turtle Moon" and "Illumination Night", did so well.

On a final note, I am quite glad I read this before I read the editorial reviews, above. Those reviews revealed way more than I would have wanted to know before reading.

Skylight Confessions A Novel Alice Hoffman 9780316058780 Books Reviews

Another outstanding Hoffman novel! I loved this book and was only upset about the ending..it kind of leaves you hanging, but it was still a great book. She has a way of making you feel for the characters. I loved this book!
Once again Alice Hoffman proves why she is such an interesting writer. Although her themes of slightly supernatural characters are her formula for each book she handles them in such different ways. This book is no exception and is welcome departure from some of her previous "witch" themes. Her characters are interesting and fully developed. Most important she makes them so fascinating and poignant that you don't want to stop reading until you get to the end. I liked the closure of this book because of the realistic way her characters bring conclusion to their life's dilemna. I can't say it was a happy ending such as you find in Practical Magic however it was a sensible one that did not leave you feeling cheated by the characters.
This was my first Hoffman book, and though I thought the first chapter strained credulity...I fell in love with it! Vivid characters; an engaging, well-crafted storyline- Skylight Confessions is a great read that resonates long after the last page.
It had me from the first page... a story about love, loss, unexpected love, fighting against love, people unable to love, deep unconditional love, and ghosts. I love Alice's style... have read at least 10 of her books.. never dissapointed.
It's been a while since I read one of her books, but after reading Skylight Confessions, I'll be sure to look at some of her other works. Alice Hoffman creates such real and complicated characters that will stay with you as you read this book. Each of the main characters is unique, and in pulling them all together in this great story, Hoffman has written a fantastic novel. I stayed up late reading and got up early to finish it. I just couldn't wait to see where everyone would end up. Excellent.
Alice Hoffman is a wonderful story-teller. She keeps it clean and without unnecessary details that too many authors tend to suffocate their novels with. Though it can be a little too fast paced in a couple spots, for the most part Hoffman keeps a very gentle pace that goes great with her story line. Skylight Confessions is filled with laughs and lines that tug pretty hard at your heart - a wonderful tale. Hoffman has a way of spinning a spell binding story with minimal words and keeps it so believable that you think you could walk right outside your door and live the story yourself. If you're looking for a book you'll read cover to cover without putting down, this one's for you.
I've read some of the other reviews here and decided to add my own view. This is the first novel I read by Hoffman and I'm impressed. I couldn't put the book down and read it over the weekend, loving the end of the book.

I have read here that Hoffman writes "magical" stories, but I found this one to be very grounded, very real life like, if it did happen somewhere ... especially in CT!!!

I recomend this novel to anyone who likes being drawn in to the story and feel the emotions of the characters.
