Nine Dragons A Harry Bosch Novel Michael Connelly Books

NINE DRAGONS is a smash. A Chinese shopkeeper is brutally murdered in south central L.A. The video security record suggests that he has been shaken down by a member of one of the Chinese Triads. Harry Bosch investigates. Harry is warned to stand down. Harry is told that his daughter has been taken captive in Hong Kong, where she has been living with Harry's ex-wife, Eleanor.

In the second act Harry travels to Hong Kong, joins with Eleanor and her Chinese boyfriend and searches for his daughter, Madeline. The body count climbs to near double figures. In the final act he returns to L.A. to solve the original crime.

The pacing is excellent and pacing is key in abduction novels. The possible results for Madeline (being sold into prostitution or being sold so that her organs can be harvested) are sufficiently horrific to propel Harry forward, despite the possible costs. At the same time, these kinds of stories (like hostage tales or stories of individuals strapped to bombs with a ticking clock attached) risk being cloying or claustrophobic. NINE DRAGONS is neither. Michael Connelly knows just when to tighten the screws and when to loosen them.

The scenes in Hong Kong are superb, both with regard to accuracy of detail and accuracy of ambience/ethos. A further bonus in the book is the appearance of Harry's half-brother, attorney Mickey Haller, the `Lincoln lawyer' of Connelly's other mini-series.

This is first-rate Michael Connelly, strong on all counts and highly recommended.

Nine Dragons A Harry Bosch Novel Michael Connelly Books Reviews

Maybe that wasn't the good idea it seemed if the rest are this slap-dash. Reading one after the other made Connelly's shortcuts stand out in sharp relief in this book. The best example may be at least 3 references to "his instincts told him" yada yada which I consider a serious cheat, and just a way to jump past logical thinking and thoughtful reflection. It read more like a formula romance, just with lots of violence.
I was also disappointed that Bosch's character was so out of character. He's always been a hyper-rational, logical cop persona shaped by his childhood and war traumas, complete with disdain for authority and great difficulty being an actual partner to a string of found/discarded partners. In this book, however, he just loses it, becoming a pile of steaming emotion over the daughter he barely knows and the ex-wife who got away.
Maybe this is the book in the series that "jumps the shark", or maybe it just shows that Connelly is spending a lot of time on the Prime Bosch series that blends parts of different books to make each new season. All I know is that I may be happy to finish the series and pick up a different author, not at all what I expected.
(I gave it two stars because it explained why he has custody of the kid in future books and the Prime series. Otherwise I was just skimming it to the end to see if there were any other series threads to carry forward.)
It’s rather remarkable that the murder of a liquor store owner in south Los Angeles causes international repercussions. That is, unless the detective investigating the murder is Harry Bosch.
Harry is told in no uncertain terms that he should back off or he’ll face some serious personal consequences. Harry, of course, is not one to trifle with. But when his daughter Maddie is abducted he must put her safety as the top item on his list of priorities. Since Maddie has been living in Hong Kong with her mother, who is also Harry’s ex-wife Eleanor Wish, an immediate trip is necessary.
About one third of the book is devoted to Harry’s time in Hong Kong while working with Eleanor and her personal security guard, a fellow named Sun Yee. I found this part uneven because Harry is battling with two competing instincts his fear for Maddie’s safety and his professional instincts to solve the original crime. The conflict is understandable but reading about it is often difficult.
The best part of the book is the final 1/3 when Harry returns to Los Angeles to wrap up the murder investigation and get his life back in order. In spite of all the turmoil, it looks like his future will be a happy one.
The murder of a Chinese owner of a small convenience store leads Harry Bosch down corridors he never would have dreamed of in his worse nightmares. While chasing down leads, he receives a startling video of his daughter, Maddie. Apparently she has been abducted in Hong Kong, where she has been living with her mother, former FBI agent, Eleanor Wish, Harry's ex-wife.
Harry, believing that his current murder investigation, and Maddie's abduction are tied together, he hops on a plane to Hong Kong, where he is met by Eleanor, and what he assumes is her bodyguard. They find the apartment where Maddie had been held, but she was gone. Although the gun laws in China are very strict (you go to jail, no ifs, ands, or buts) the bodyguard gets him a weapon, there is the assumption that whomever took Maddie would be armed.
After finding Maddie, who is shaken but uninjured, she and Harry return to Los Angeles. The murder investigation has basically lost wind and the prime suspect is about to be released.
There were some twists and turns and just as you think you've got it figured out...you'd be wrong.
I was thoroughly entertained, and hated to see it end.
